The "new" in New Tampa arose from the desire of developers in the middle 1980s to find a place to create new communities with great amenities and conveniences.

They found it in this area which was bursting with green open spaces and conservation lands.

The city of Tampa began annexing this place in the 1980s and then named it New Tampa in 1992, after creating its first community council.
